So, once again, I am a free agent. It’s now official: FOR HIRE.

I’ve recently been laid off by CultureMob.com. I was an employee of a company where a weak economy shows it’s head much sooner than I expected. The company’s current revenue source is from investors; and the market suddenly became a tougher place for investment (which is too bad, because we were beating all our projections).

For those confused on how I could be laid off from a company that I co-created, I never invested in the company financially as some of the other members had; and therefore never had “co-founder” status. With my primary role in the company being the designer, my position wasn’t as necessary as some of the others (which makes sense to me).

Now, that being said, I’ve been enjoying my time off so far. I’ve taken the time to get my portfolio in working order. I’ve taken in a couple freelance gigs and will start to evaluate what offers are out there. I still wish the best to the folks at CultureMob and am rooting for them to make a great product even better. In under a year on the market, we were able to come close to feature parity while giving the competition a 5 year head start.

So, if you’ve got a great lead for me, by all means, toss it my way. I’d appreciate it.

Rutu Modan, author of last year’s great Exit Wounds, just finished up her 17-part strip in the New York Times Funny Pages, the Murder of the Terminal Patient.

Earlier this year, I consolidated Dan Clowes’ 20-page entry for the Funny Pages into a single PDF file; and now I’ve gone back and complied single PDFs for all of the NYT Funny Pages’ past strips. Enjoy:

Rutu Modan - The Murder of the Terminal Patient (16MB)

Jason - Low Moon (17MB)

NOTE: These are highly compressed, so there are slight visual artifacts. Their natural file size would be in the 40 - 80 MB range.

You got close enough to touch it, and it got on you.'' Then more than a year passed, and I got kicked off the ballot in South Carolina during my brief presidential run. I had actually been on the phone with people in South Carolina, telling me I was gonna be fine. People were on the phone lying to me. And I called Jon and said, ''I touched it…again.'' That was disappointing. I thought I could put myself all the way in it and not feel it, but I did. I realized, ''I understand, maybe, why people end up not being so good.'' Because they get lied to a lot."

<img src="http://chrisbrummel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/jamiejanelle.jpg" alt="Jamie and Janelle" title="Jamie and Janelle" width="445" height="186"" class="img-right" />I’ve found I’m a big sucker for the whole Motown revival and tracing back the trend points to the Daptone Records; but as far as I can tell, the first out of the UK to notice wasn’t Amy Winehouse, but Jamie Lidell with “Multiply” a year before her “Back To Black“. The last “revival” album that I really geeked out over was Lidell’s “Jim” back in April.

Little Bit Of Feel Good - Jim:

In May, I saw that he was coming stateside and made sure that I caught him. The show was good, but not great. I feel a kinship to a dorky white guy who can’t help but express his honest love for soul music. What I didn’t like is that his backup band was a little thin to get the full effect I’d like for the sound: A single guy alternating between playing guitar and bass and a single sax player in the place of a horn section.

Good news/Bad news: He’s back for a second US tour. I was hoping that he’d grew in stature from his first “Jim” tour and now had a larger band, but it doesn’t appear so.

BUT, I just found out that his opening act is the *new* artist that I’m geeking out over: Janelle Monae. She’s part Outkast, part P-Funk, part electro-funk-punk, part Erykah Badu. Her recently re-released Fritz Lang inspired EP has been on HEAVY rotation anywhere I can play it.

Sincerely, Jane - Metropolis:

As much as Jamie is representing the past with a little bit of future, she’s representing the future with a little bit of past. They’ll be performing together October 3rd at the Showbox.
